| Hot on the heels of the release of its HTC Evo 4G, Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE:S) unveiled its Samsung Epic 4G smart phone Monday, featuring a slide-out keyboard and four-inch touchscreen. Sprint's Epic boasts push email for business-minded buyers, an integrated calendar and Exchange ActiveSync corporate email. Epic will operate on the Android 2.1 operating system, with the ability to upgrade to the more secure, enterprise-ready Android 2.2, or Froyo, soon, according to Sprint officials. Sprint officials said the company plans to offer Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) Mobile Services, but have not disclosed details on upgraded security features, better device management, pricing or delivery information. The Epic is Samsung's first 4G Android smart phone, which works on 4G and 3G CDMA networks. The smart phone is entering the market at a tough time in terms of competition; Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ) also launched a rival Samsung phone Monday called the Fascinate, reports ComputerWorld, and Apple Inc's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 4 has already sold 1.7 million units in its first three days on tech shelves since its Thursday, June 24th launch. Shares of Sprint are trading up 5.36% Monday afternoon at $4.43. |
